Dining Room Art Or What I Know So Far

image

Detail of study for “In the Dining Room,” oil on canvas, Nancy Gail Ring 2010

Here is a detail from a new painting I am making studies for that will be about small moments. I’m asking a lot of new questions now in my painting practice, looking to communicate something more and something truer than my habitual ways of working from the past. This is a little portrait of my son at the dining room table. Enjoy.

Nancy - I’m glad you said it was your son. I thought at first it might be you. I like the subdued color palette. It has a dream-like feeling.

Thank you. Your comment helps me press on since I am going for a more dream-like and poetic vision, and it’s nice to know it’s starting to come through. Changing is such hard work and even harder to share what is unresolved. I do it because I believe in process. The title of the post comes from something a painting professor said to me once, that each time you show your work you are sharing “what you know so far” out of a lifetime of effort. I appreciate that you took the time to take a look. Thanks again.

I love looking at your new work - especially the one you posted today. I wish I could see them in person.  And the title reminds me of another book title: After the Ecstacy, the Laundry (by Jack Kornfield, a book about Buddhism). Sounds like you had a heavenly day at the beach!
